How to Get There
The journey to the Stoos hike begins in the picturesque, car-free mountain village of Stoos, which is easily accessible via the steepest funicular in the world from the town of Schwyz. My friend and I drove to the base of the funicular, arriving around 10 AM, and found parking easily.
By Public Transport: Take a train to the town of Schwyz (about 1 hour from both, Zurich or Lucerne), followed by a bus from the train station to Schlattli (Bus 501), where the funicular station is located. This option allows you to enjoy the scenic Swiss countryside without worrying about driving.
By Car: If you prefer to drive, you can park your car directly in front of the funicular station at Schlattli. This provides a convenient option for those traveling with more gear or preferring the flexibility of their own vehicle.
The Stoosbahn
The Stoosbahn, an engineering marvel and a key highlight of the journey to Stoos, is the world's steepest funicular railway. Opened in 2017, this state-of-the-art funicular replaces its older counterpart, offering a more modern and efficient means of transportation. With a maximum gradient of 110%, the Stoosbahn climbs a staggering 744 meters over a track length of just 1,740 meters, making it an exhilarating experience in itself. The railway features cylindrical cabins designed to keep passengers level as they ascend the steep incline. As you glide up the mountainside, you're treated to spectacular views of the surrounding landscape, setting the stage for the incredible hiking experience that awaits in Stoos. This remarkable funicular is not just a means of transportation but an attraction that adds to the uniqueness and excitement of visiting the Swiss Alps.
When purchasing your ticket for the Stoosbahn, it's a good idea to buy a return ticket to Fronalpstock as well.

Personal Tips
Timing: Arriving early in the morning allows you to enjoy the hike at a more leisurely pace, avoiding the midday crowds. During the summer, consider avoiding Saturday and Sunday if you can between 11 AM and 2 PM. The path is narrow, and it can feel stressful if there are a lot of people, especially if you want to take it slow and enjoy the surroundings.
Chairlift shortcut: The Klingenstock chairlift is a great option if you want to experience the ridge walk without tackling the entire hike
Picnic spots: There are plenty of lovely picnic tables along the way where you can take a break and soak in the views. Bringing your own snacks can make for a perfect outdoor lunch.
Bring water: You’ll need it.
End of hike treat: At the Fronalpstock chairlift, there's a restaurant with a large terrace where you can enjoy a snack or a refreshing beer while taking in the panoramic views. Afterward, you can either take the chairlift down or continue hiking if you have the energy. Although the descent takes about two hours, be aware that some sections are quite steep and can be challenging.
