Why Visit Ulm, Germany: An Unforgettable Weekend Getaway

Updated: Sep 21

If you’re looking for an original idea for weekend trips from Zurich, Ulm is a fantastic choice. Located on the Danube in southern Germany, Ulm combines history, culture, and a more relaxed vibe than popular Swiss destinations. It’s also budget-friendlier than hotspots like Lake Como or Lucerne, making it a smart option for a short escape.

Why Visit Ulm, Germany?

Ulm is known for its striking Münster Cathedral, which has the tallest church spire in the world (161.5 m). Climb to the top for sweeping views over the city and Danube plain. The town also charms with half-timbered houses, cobbled streets, and the famous Fishermen’s Quarter with its crooked houses and little canals.

I visited Ulm in December during the Christmas market season and loved how compact and walkable it is. Within two days, you can cover the highlights, enjoy regional Swabian food, and still find time to soak up the festive atmosphere.

Where Is Ulm, Germany?

Ulm lies in Baden-Württemberg, Germany, about 230 km north of Zurich. By car it’s just under three hours, depending on traffic. By train, travel time is about 3.5 hours with one change.

How to Get to Ulm from Zurich

By Car: Driving is one of the easiest and fastest ways to get to Ulm from Switzerland. Most northern Swiss cities are 2-3 hours away, with Zurich about a 2.5-hour drive. If you’re passing through Austria, consider stopping to fill up on petrol, as prices are often lower there.

  • Tip: Fill up on petrol in Austria where it’s cheaper.

  • Parking in Ulm city center costs EUR 10–15 per day.

By Train: Driving takes around 3 hours. The route goes via St. Gallen and Bregenz, briefly passing through Austria before entering Germany.

Where to Stay

Staying in or near Ulm’s city center is ideal for convenience. You can park your car and explore on foot for the rest of the weekend. A great option is Hotel am Rathaus. I stayed here during the Christmas market, and it was perfect for the occasion. Cozy, simple, and just a short walk to the Münsterplatz and other attractions. Parking is available nearby, which made it easy to arrive by car and forget about driving for the rest of the weekend. Rooms are around EUR 120/night (CHF 110–120).

Budget: ibis Ulm City – rooms from EUR 70/night (CHF 65–70)

Luxury: Maritim Hotel Ulm – riverside, larger rooms, spa, from EUR 160/night (CHF 150–160)
