The Best Lakes to Vacation on in Switzerland

Updated: Sep 14

Switzerland boasts some of the world’s most breathtaking lakes, each with its own unique scenery and unforgettable experiences. Whether you’re after adventure, relaxation, or cultural exploration, you’ll find the perfect lake destination here. Having visited all of these lakes myself, I’ll guide you through the best places to plan your next Swiss vacation.

1. Lake Geneva – Cosmopolitan Charm Meets Alpine Beauty

What's Special About It?

Lake Geneva, Switzerland's largest lake, combines stunning Alpine vistas with cultural richness and scenic vineyards. The lake stretches from the vibrant city of Geneva to the enchanting town of Montreux, making it an ideal destination for every type of traveler.

Why Visit?

  • Visit the Château de Chillon, an iconic lakeside castle.

  • Explore the Lavaux Vineyards, a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

  • Enjoy the famous Montreux Jazz Festival in summer.

  • Take a scenic paddle steamer cruise.

  • Visit Evian-les-Bains on the French side, home to the famous Evian water fountain (bring empty bottles to fill up at the fountain in the town center for free).

  • Check out the nearby Gruyère cheese factory (scroll down to 4) and its scenic old town.

  • Take a day trip to charming Annecy, France.

  • Explore Lausanne and the Olympic Museum.

  • Ride the train up to Les Pléiades.

Best Location to Stay:

  • Montreux: Fairmont Le Montreux Palace combines luxury with lake views.

  • Vevey: Stay at Grand Hotel du Lac for a boutique experience.

  • Evian-les-Bains (home of the Evian water fountain): An ideal base to explore the southern side of the lake, especially for budget-conscious travelers.

My Personal Take

Lake Geneva is definitely a place where you can easily spend a week with family and friends. It possesses a wonderful southern atmosphere. There's plenty to do in and around the lake. I highly recommend walking through the Lavaux vineyards, visiting Evian, and exploring Château de Chillon. If I had a week or more to spend in one location, it would be Lake Geneva. I’ve stayed both in Montreux and in Evian (french side), and each gave a different angle on the lake. My top recommendation is to spend time walking the Lavaux vineyards and visiting Château de Chillon.

2. Lake Lucerne – Storybook Scenery and Rich History

What’s Special About It?

Lake Lucerne is surrounded by fjord-like landscapes, charming villages, and historical landmarks. It offers access to the iconic Pilatus and Rigi mountains, making it ideal for adventure and relaxation.

Why Visit?

  • Ride a paddle steamer across the lake.

  • Discover Lucerne's Old Town, Chapel Bridge, and Lion Monument.

  • Take the cogwheel train to Mount Pilatus.

  • Hike up Mount Rigi.

  • Explore quiet lakeside villages like Weggis and Vitznau.

  • Take the world's steepest cogwheel train to Stoos and hike the Klingenstock to Fronalpstock ridge.

  • Hike to Hotel Villa Honegg (or stay there if you can afford it) for the famous Instagram-worthy view over Lake Lucerne.

  • Visit Aeschbach Chocolatier AG (3rd from top) for chocolate tasting and a museum tour.

  • Lucerne is a great base for a day trip to Interlaken (via scenic train) or Engelberg with its cable car up to Mount Titlis.

Best Location to Stay:

  • Lucerne City: Hotel des Balances offers lakeside luxury in the heart of the city.

  • Weggis: Vitznauerhof Hotel is perfect for a serene retreat.

My Personal Take

Lake Lucerne is perfect for a long weekend or a four-day trip. I recommend starting your day with a hike or a trip up one of the mountains, either Rigi or Pilatus, for stunning views over the lake. Be sure to check the webcams beforehand to ensure clear skies. For hiking, I loved the route from Stansstad to Hotel Villa Honegg, then to the Bürgenstock elevator. Another favorite is the Stoos Ridge Hike, which offers incredible panoramas. Don’t miss Lucerne’s Old Town, where the Chapel Bridge and Lion Monument are absolute highlights. Besides Lucerne, I also stayed in Vitznau. It is perfect for unwinding with a spa day or a refreshing swim in the lake. Ferries from Vitznau connect you to Lucerne and other towns around the lake. While staying in Lucerne is ideal for exploring destinations farther from Lake Lucerne, Vitznau offers a more relaxing experience. I also think Lake Lucerne is perfect for sailing. I used to come here with a friend, and because the lake has so many bends and arms, there is always a new view waiting behind the next corner. That variety makes it more interesting than straighter lakes like Lake Zurich or Lake Geneva, where the horizon feels the same for long stretches.

3. Lake Brienz – Turquoise Waters and Unspoiled Nature

What’s Special About It?

Lake Brienz is known for its vibrant turquoise waters and tranquil surroundings. It’s a haven for nature lovers and those seeking peaceful adventures.

Why Visit?

  • Visit Giessbach Falls, accessible by boat or hike.

  • Take the historic Brienz Rothorn Railway.

  • Discover the woodcarving town of Brienz.

  • Kayak or paddleboard on the crystal-clear lake.

  • It's a perfect location for day trips to Interlaken, Grindelwald, Lauterbrunnen, and Jungfraujoch.

  • Take the mountain train up to Harder Kulm in Interlaken.

  • Visit Iseltwald, made famous by the Korean TV show Crash Landing on You.

  • Visit the city of Thun.

  • Discover the famous Blausee and Oeschinen Lake.

Best Location to Stay:

  • Brienz: Grandhotel Giessbach, located next to the waterfalls.

  • Iseltwald: Chalet du Lac offers cozy lakeside charm.

  • Interlaken: If you prefer a busier atmosphere, this is the place with more restaurant options and excellent train connections.

Personal Take

I think Lake Brienz is best if you give it four or five days. There’s a great mix here with hiking trails, cable cars and mountain views that really stay with you. If you are only coming to tick off the big attractions like Jungfraujoch, Lauterbrunnen or Interlaken, then a weekend is probably enough.

I’ve stayed in this area at least four times. Once in Trachsellauenen at the end of the Lauterbrunnen Valley, surrounded by nothing but mountains and waterfalls. The views were amazing and it felt like a pure nature stay, but it’s very remote. In summer it was perfect, though at other times of the year it would probably be too cold.

When I stayed in Brienzwiler I noticed the nearby military airport can be noisy during the day. On weekends it was completely quiet and I really enjoyed being based there. Just avoid staying too far east of Brienz if you are sensitive to noise.

Interlaken has become very touristic over the years. I personally prefer Brienz or the smaller villages around the lake because they feel more authentic and relaxed. If you want more restaurants, shops and a livelier atmosphere, Interlaken might suit you better. The train ride from Lucerne to Brienz and Interlaken is absolutely spectacular and worth doing no matter where you stay.

4. Lake Lugano – A Taste of Mediterranean Switzerland

View over Lake Lugano and Lugano city

What’s Special About It?

Lake Lugano is a blend of Swiss and Italian cultures. It offers a Mediterranean vibe with palm trees, mild weather, and gourmet cuisine.

Why Visit?

  • Explore the city of Lugano, known for its shopping and restaurants.

  • Hike Monte Brè or Monte San Salvatore for panoramic views.

  • Stroll along the Parco Ciani lakeside park.

  • Visit charming villages like Morcote and Gandria.

  • Venture to the town of Como (Italy) to explore the stunning Lake Como.

  • Discover the famous Valle Verzasca, home to the picturesque Ponte dei Salti and the 'James Bond: GoldenEye' bungee jump at the dam.

  • The impressive villages of Ascona and Locarno on Lago Maggiore are just a short distance away.

  • Explore the three castles of Bellinzona, a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Best Location to Stay:

  • Lugano: The Villa Principe Leopoldo offers luxury and lake views. We once stayed at Hotel Colibrì, which offers beautiful views over Lake Lugano. The rates were quite affordable, especially considering the view.

  • Morcote: Swiss Diamond Hotel provides a serene escape.

  • Locarno, Ascona, or Como serve as excellent alternatives (not on Lake Lugano).

Personal Note

The Lake Lugano area is my personal favorite, and we visit regularly. Over the years, we've stayed in various towns, including Lugano, Locarno, Ascona, Bellinzona (not on Lake Lugano), and Como (Italy).

What I love most about Lake Lugano is its blend of Italian charm and Swiss organization, creating a perfect experience. Thanks to its southern location, the climate is mild. While it might be cold and gloomy on the northern side of the Alps, the weather around Lake Lugano can be stunning, even in autumn and spring.

I recommend staying in or near Lugano and taking day trips to Monte Brè, the Valle Verzasca, and Como in Italy. Together with Lake Geneva, Lake Lugano is my top recommendation for a vacation in Switzerland.

5. Lake Constance – Where Three Countries Meet

What’s Special About It?

Lake Constance (Bodensee) borders Switzerland, Germany, and Austria, offering unique cultural experiences. It’s ideal for cycling, water sports, and exploring quaint towns.

Why Visit?

  • Visit the medieval town of Stein am Rhein.

  • Cycle along the famous Bodensee bike route.

  • Visit the city of Lindau, a charming island city on the lake.

  • Explore Friedrichshafen, home of the Zeppelin.

  • Relax on serene Mainau Island, renowned for its stunning gardens.

  • Visit Konstanz and Bregenz.

  • See Europe’s largest waterfall, the Rheinfall.

Best Location to Stay:

  • Lindau, Meersburg (Germany)

  • Stein am Rhein: Hotel Chlosterhof for historical charm.

Personal Take

The towns around Lake Constance are a good choice for day trips from Zurich or Basel. Personally, I wouldn’t spend more than a long weekend here. The area has become quite expensive and, since it is far from the Alps, it has a different feel compared to Switzerland’s mountain lakes.

On my last visit I stayed in Nonnenhofen near Lindau. It was quiet, family-friendly and a great base for biking, which made it ideal for a short stay.

There are still excellent attractions nearby. The Rhine Falls, Europe’s largest waterfall, is less than an hour away, and the medieval town of Stein am Rhein is one of the most charming in Switzerland. If you plan to stay overnight, I recommend the German side, especially Lindau or Friedrichshafen, where you find more options and better value. On the Swiss side, the town of Kreuzlingen in Canton Thurgau is the closest larger base.

6. Walensee – The Swiss Fjord

What’s Special About It?

Walensee, often called the “Swiss Fjord,” boasts dramatic cliffs and crystal-clear waters. It’s perfect for hikers and those seeking peace and quiet.

Why Visit?

  • Hike the scenic trail to Seerenbach Falls.

  • Viewpoint Chapf

  • Take a boat ride across the lake for stunning views.

  • Enjoy water sports like paddleboarding and kayaking.

  • Visit the car-free village of Quinten, accessible only by boat or hike.

Best Location to Stay:

  • Walenstadt: Resort Walensee for a relaxing getaway.

  • Quinten: Stay in a rustic chalet for a secluded escape.

7. Lake Silvaplana – Paradise for Adventure Lovers

What’s Special About It?

Lake Silvaplana is a windsurfing and kitesurfing hotspot, thanks to its consistent Maloja winds. It’s surrounded by the stunning Engadine Valley, offering endless outdoor activities.

Colorful kites line a grassy lakeside under a clear blue sky, with mountains in the background and people preparing for kitesurfing.

Why Visit?

  • Windsurf or kitesurf on the lake.

  • Enjoy world-class hiking and biking trails.

  • Relax in the chic alpine village of St. Moritz nearby.

  • Marvel at the pristine beauty of the surrounding mountains.

Best Location to Stay:

  • Silvaplana: Nira Alpina offers contemporary luxury and mountain views.

  • St. Moritz: Suvretta House combines elegance and alpine charm.

Personal Take

In the evening the winds stops and the lake is perfect for a BBQ
In the evening the winds stops and the lake is perfect for a BBQ

Lake Silvaplana is my favorite lake in summer. Outside of the warm months it can feel too cold and windy, but in July and August it’s perfect. We often come here to watch the windsurfers and kitesurfers, hike in the Engadin Valley, take the cable cars up into the mountains and explore nearby valleys like Val Fex or Val Roseg, both of which are absolutely stunning.

I usually stay in Silvaplana itself, which is the closest town to the lake. In recent years it has become more cosmopolitan and quite expensive, so next time I plan to stay in Sils or one of the smaller villages around St. Moritz. These villages are quieter, still close to the lake, and make an excellent base for exploring the region.

What is the Best Lake to Vacation on in Switzerland?

This is my personal ranking: I enjoy a good mix of outdoor activities, small to medium-sized towns, and the chance to swim in the lake or simply relax.

  1. Lake Lugano – I love the blend of Italian charm and Swiss organization.

  2. Lake Geneva – There’s always something happening, making it lively and exciting.

  3. Lake Silvaplana – While small, the Engadine region offers plenty of activities.

  4. Lake Lucerne – For many, it’s the number one choice, but for me, it ranks fourth.

  5. Lake Brienz – Beautiful but often crowded with mainstream tourists.

  6. Walensee – Perfect for day trips, but challenging to spend a longer duration.

  7. Lake Constance – Plenty of activities, but the vibe is more lake-like than mountain.

Whether you're drawn to cosmopolitan cities or tranquil lakeside villages, Switzerland's lakes have something for everyone. Explore, relax, and create unforgettable memories on your next vacation.

Why Lake Zurich Isn’t on This List

You might notice that Lake Zurich is not included. That could be because I live here or simply because I don’t find it as special as the others. It is not a bad place to visit and there are plenty of things to do around the city, but for a vacation the other lakes offer more unique scenery and experiences.

FAQ: Vacationing on Switzerland’s Lakes

For me it’s Lake Lugano. The blend of Italian charm and Swiss organization, together with the southern climate, makes it perfect. Lake Geneva is also excellent if you want more cultural activities and events.

Lake Geneva and Lake Constance are great for families. Both have easy access towns, boat rides, playgrounds and lots of day trips nearby.
